IWC Schaffhausen Wristwatches
International Watch Co. Schaffhausen
The International Watch Company was founded in 1868 in Schaffhausen,
Germany, by an American, Ariosto Jones.
Hence the English-German name.
Situating his new factory on the Rhine River, a newly constructed
hydroelectric power station provided power for his machines.
And he also chose the location because of an already long local
tradition of watchmaking.
Innovations began soon after with a pocket watch with a mechanical
digital display in 1885.
Innovations continued regularly, and in the 1950s the company led the
competition in the race to introduce the first automatic movements.
Today, IWC continues with craft perfection, the training of its
specialists, and the renunciation of mass-market products in order to
make quality watches for small numbers of people.
